UK Drone Laws
Where can I fly my drone?
Operate Your Drone - Legally And Safely
Know the essential rules with our definitive guide to UK drone laws
Flight Categories
Most drone operations will be conducted within two categories: Open Category (smaller drones/low risk flights) or Specific Category (larger drones/more complex missions).
Drone Registration
UK drone registration is required - unless you have a sub 250g drone which has no camera or is classed as a toy. Registration involves obtaining a Flyer ID and/or Operator ID.
Drone Training
The principle training courses to fly a drone are the A2 CofC (for some Open Category flights) and GVC (Specific Category). These courses can be completed with heliguy™.
Open Category
Low-risk drone flights
The Open Category is for low-risk flights - either because the operator is flying a small drone or they are operating a larger aircraft far from people and away from built-up areas.
This category is typically for recreational pilots and some commercial operations. Popular aircraft flown in the Open Category tend to be the DJI Mini Series, DJI Neo, DJI Mavic and Air Series, and FPV drones, like DJI Avata 2.
You do not require specific approval from the UK CAA to fly in the Open Category - although in some cases, an A2 Certificate of Competency (A2 CofC) is needed.
Specific Category
Higher risk drone operations
The Specific Category is for higher-risk and more complex drone operations - enabling larger drones to operate closer to built-up areas. It also caters for pilots operating beyond standard permissions - such as conducting BVLOS flights.
Approval - via an Operational Authorisation - is required from the UK CAA.
The training pathway involves the General Visual Line of Sight Certificate (GVC) course.
Typically, most commercial operators opt for this route - demonstrating a higher level of competency and enabling them to make the most out of drones such as the DJI Matrice Series, DJI Dock, DJI Inspire 3, and DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise Series.
Drone Registration
Register for a Flyer ID & Operator ID
Drone registration is an important step to take to ensure you are flying and operating legally. Failure to register could result in hefty penalties. Drone registration is required in most cases - unless you are flying a sub 250g drone that does not have a camera or is classed as a toy. Register through the UK CAA to obtain a Flyer ID and/or an Operator ID.
Drone Licence Calculator
Find out which training you need for your drone
Confused about what training you need to operate your drone? Use our drone licence calculator to help select the most appropriate training pathway - based on the weight of your aircraft and your operational requirements.
The calculator will recommend whether you need to complete the A2 Certificate of Competency (A2 CofC), the General Visual Line of Sight Certificate (GVC) course, or if training is not required.
You can book an A2 CofC or GVC with heliguy™. Benefit from online learning with remote and real-time access to our instructors; on-location face-to-face industry-specific training for organisations with a requirement to train multiple pilots; and lifetime support from an experienced and full-time team of 10 instructors who have trained 7,000+ candidates.
FPV Drone Laws
Rules for drone racing and flying with goggles
First-person-view (FPV) drone flight offers a thrilling and immersive experience - but what are the rules around it? Our in-depth guide to FPV flying and drone racing will tell you all you need to know.
BVLOS Drone Operations
Unlocking the potential of the UAS industry
The future of the commercial drone sector: Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations extend the range of flights and unlock automated and remote round-the-clock missions.
BVLOS is ideal for long-range or centrally-managed tasks, like infrastructure inspections, large-scale agricultural monitoring, security and surveillance, public safety, and delivery and logistics - helping organisations make the most out of solutions like DJI Dock 2 drone in a box and the DJI FlyCart delivery drone.
heliguy™ has an in-house OSC consultancy to help organisations plan and build an Operational Safety Case to move forward with BVLOS operations.
